This Cape Cod beach was once again named among the top 10 beaches in America

Each year, coastal scientist "Dr. Beach" puts together a list using 50 criteria.

A Cape Cod beach was named one of the top 10 beaches in America by a coastal scientist who has ranked them annually for the past 27 years.

Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, also known as “Dr. Beach,” appointed Coast Guard Beach in Eastham as the No. 5 beach in the U.S. in 2018, moving it up one spot from No. 6 in 2017. The Cape spot, which is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, is the only New England beach on the list. According to Leatherman, the No. 1 beach in America is Kapalua Bay Beach in Maui, Hawaii.

Leatherman lauded Coast Guard Beach’s “spectacular view” of the Nauset Spit barrier system and bay from the “picturesque” old Coast Guard station. He also pointed out that the beach is accessible by bike or shuttle bus from the Salt Pond Visitor’s Center.

“During the summer, beach-goers take quick, refreshing dips in the ocean as water temperatures only reach 60-70 degrees,” Leatherman wrote.

Leatherman, a professor and director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University and author of “America’s Best Beaches,” has published an annual list of the top 10 U.S. beaches every Memorial Day weekend since 1991. He uses 50 criteria — including water and sand quality, as well as how safe the beaches are and how well they are managed — to evaluate the beaches. View the full list of America’s top beaches here.
