Halloween is two weeks away, but the snow is already flying at some New England ski resorts.
Sunday River in Newry, Maine, received two to three inches of natural snow overnight, according to Karolyn Castaldo, director of communications at the resort.
The resort has begun making snow as well, she said, and could open as soon as this weekend for skiing and riding.
Meanwhile, at Killington Resort in Central Vermont’s Green Mountains, workers began making snow on Tuesday. The resort is preparing for the upcoming ski season, which is slotted to begin this weekend, as well as the 2018 Audi FIS Ski World Cup, which will once again bring the women’s giant slalom and slalom races to Vermont over Thanksgiving weekend.
Killington’s snowmaking system can cover 80 acres with 12 inches of fresh snow in a matter of hours by using 240 snow guns it pumps with more than 720,000 gallons of water, according to the resort.
