Want to make your Halloween season extra spooky? Three ghost tours in the region were just named among the best in America by USA Today readers.

Bar Harbor Ghost Tours in Bar Harbor, Maine, ranked No. 3; Voodoo, Vampire, and Ghosts Tour in Salem came in at No. 5; and Haunted Boston Ghost Tours in Boston got spot No. 10 on a list of the top 10 best ghost tours in America, released last week as part of USA Today’s 2018 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards. The No. 1 ghost tour in  the U.S. went to French Quarter Phantoms in New Orleans.

“You’ll recognize Bar Harbor Ghost Tours by their distinctive blue lantern,” the publication wrote about Bar Harbor Ghost Tours. “These nightly excursions give an overview of New England paranormal history from a Native American perspective. The tour includes exclusive nighttime access to the 1932 Criterion Theatre.”

USA Today readers’ No. 5 pick is found in festive Salem, where the Witch City’s Haunted Happenings celebration takes place all month long.

“Spellbound Tours has been offering their Voodoo, Vampires, and Ghosts Tour for more than 15 years,” the publication wrote. “Historically accurate and genuinely creepy, these tours are led by professional paranormal investigators who’ll tell stories and teach participants how to capture evidence of ghosts on their own cameras.”

As for No. 10, the listing closest to home, the publication wrote, “The Haunted Boston Ghost Tours share a side of Boston’s history visitors don’t often get to learn about, much less focus on after dark. They are the stories of Boston’s dark side: murderers, wars, deaths, a crazy nanny and a pyromaniac circus ringleader.”

For the 10Best Reader’s Choice Awards lists, USA Today travel experts select 20 nominees in topics that range from food to lodging, destinations to things to do, and then ask readers to cast votes to determine the top 10.
