James Develin is enjoying his seventh season with the New England Patriots, and while being a pro football player and father of two (with a third on the way) keeps him busy, he looks forward to spending time in the offseason in Hawaii, which he says is “like paradise.’’ Develin, 30, is from Gilbertsville, Pa., and played football at Brown University. He and his wife, Jennifer, and their growing family live in Rhode Island. We caught up with Develin to talk about all things travel.
Favorite vacation destination? Hawaii. Because I love that it’s like paradise out there, but it’s also got the conveniences of home, being that it’s still America.
Favorite food or drink while vacationing? Really anything. I’ve always been one of those guys who goes to look for the little local spots. So, really it just kind of varies wherever I am. Drinking? I’m not a big-time drinker, but I do like something by the pool . . . something good.
Where would you like to travel to but haven’t? I’d like to go to Ireland because I’m mainly Irish. It’s on the docket for my wife and I to go to Ireland. We’ve been to Italy and a couple of other places in Europe, but I would like to go to Ireland.
One item you can’t leave home without when traveling? I’d say my phone just because everything is on there: translations, directions. . . . It’s amazing what our phones can do now.
Aisle or window? Window for sure. I just like to have something to lean on. In the aisle, I always get my elbow bumped. Even though there’s a little less shoulder space for me, I like to lean against the window.
Favorite childhood travel memory? Going to Disney World my first time. It was 1994, so I was like 6 or 7, and that was such a great time for me to go. Our parents surprised us with it and [we had] an awesome time.
Guilty pleasure when traveling? Just eating. I eat so much because, you know, you’ve got to let loose a little bit while on vacation.
Best travel tip? When doing your actual traveling, just try to relax and enjoy it. I feel like everyone – especially when you’re in the airport – everyone’s in such a rush and everybody’s so high-strung and stressed all the time. Everyone is going to have fun and relax on vacation, so take that mentality when traveling. It’s not always [the most fun] part, but you’ve got to try to make the best of it.
