On Wednesday, Amtrak announced a new “Share Fares” discount through which tickets become less expensive when you buy them in groups of four or fewer. The discount is valid for certain routes, including the Northeast Regional between Boston and Washington, D.C.

Here’s how it works: When you book travel for up to four people on the same itinerary, you’ll receive discounts on all tickets in the group after the first. Ticket No. 1 will be full price, the second will be 15% off, the third will be 60% off, and the fourth will be 70% off.

The tickets are one-way adult tickets in coach, aren’t valid on the Acela Express, and can’t be combined with any other discount. Customers buying tickets should use the promo code V291, and reservations must be made at least three days in advance of the travel date.

The Share Fares discount is also available on the following train routes across the rest of the country: California Zephyr, Capitol Limited, Cardinal, City of New Orleans, Coast Starlight, Crescent, Empire Builder, Lake Shore Limited, Palmetto, Silver Meteor, Silver Star, Southwest Chief, and Texas Eagle.
