It will now cost less to travel with sports and music equipment on American Airlines

Time to plan a surfing trip?

Musicians and athletes may now pay less when traveling with their equipment on American Airlines.

American announced on Tuesday that it is eliminating the $150 flat fee charged for some oversized sports and music equipment, effective for travel on or after May 21. The change was based on feedback from customers and American team members, the airline wrote.

That means, for example, a traveler with a surfboard will pay just the $30 cost of a standard first bag rather than the previous $150 fee to check the oversized item, according to an American Airlines press release. Also as part of the policy change, skiers and snowboarders can now check in an equipment bag with their skis or snowboard and both items will be counted as one item, according to the airline. All items that fall under the new policy must weigh fewer than 50 pounds.

There are oversized items that do not qualify for the new policy. Due to special handling requirements, items such as hang gliders, scuba tanks, and kite and windsurfing items will still cost $150 to check.

You can find out if your item is part of the policy change by checking the American Airlines website.
