As you plot your next New England getaway, USA Today readers can help you narrow down your hotel options after naming several local hotels among the nation’s best in categories ranging from waterfront to romantic to family.
USA Today revealed its list of best hotels in America on Friday, as voted on by readers, and many New England hotels spanning Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine, and Vermont made the cut.
Two Massachusetts hotels were recognized, and they’re both on Nantucket. When it comes to the best waterfront hotels in America, New England boasts three hotels on the list: Ocean House in Watch Hill, R.I. at No. 2, Tides Beach Club in Kennebunkport, Maine at No. 5, and White Elephant on Nantucket at No. 9. The No. 1 waterfront hotel is Acqualina Resort & Spa in Sunny Isles Beach, Fla.
The Wauwinet on Nantucket ranked No. 8 among the best romantic hotels in America, the only New England entry on that list. The No. 1 spot went to the Hamilton-Turner Inn in Savannah, Ga.
“Newly renovated, The Wauwinet offers a seaside escape for couples, complete with historic architecture, stellar views, and luxury amenities like private beach access, a daily port and cheese hour in the library, and jitney service to and from Nantucket Town,” USA Today editors wrote.
Rhode Island’s Ocean House was the only New England hotel named twice, also ranking No. 2 for best destination resort. Hidden Pond in Kennebunkport, Maine ranked No. 4 in the category. The No. 1 destination resort is C Lazy U Ranch in Granby, Colo.
Speaking of resorts, Migis Lodge in South Casco, Maine ranked No. 6 for best all-inclusive resort, the only New England entry on that list. The top dog in this category was Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island, Mich.
Wellness-minded travelers can check out New Life Hiking Spa in Killington, Vermont, which ranked No. 5 for best wellness retreat, the only New England spot on the list. The No. 1 place to go for wellness is Hilton Head Health in Hilton Head, S.C.
“New Life Hiking Spa is one of the oldest and best destination spa programs in the country, welcoming some 800 guests each season,” USA Today editors wrote. “Eleven-night weight loss retreats cater to 40 people at a time and include hiking programs for beginner through advanced fitness levels. Yoga, outdoor workouts, and a healthy eating program round out the resort’s holistic approach to health and wellness.”
Another standout in New England was Inn by the Sea in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, which ranked No. 5 for best eco-friendly hotel — the only local entry on that list. The No. 1 eco-friendly hotel is The Ritz-Carlton in Charlotte, N.C.
And, finally, traveling foodies should look to Maine, where two New England eateries in the Pine Tree State impressed USA Today readers in the category of best hotel restaurants. The Thistle Inn Restaurant at The Thistle Inn in Boothbay Harbor ranked No. 4 and Natalie’s Restaurant at Camden Harbour Inn in Camden ranked No. 8. The best hotel restaurant in the land is Jack Rose at Pontchartrain Hotel in New Orleans.
“Diners at The Thistle Inn are seated in four dining rooms, each with its own unique atmosphere for a romantic dinner,” according to the USA Today editors. “The menu changes with the seasons, but might include options like New England clam chowder, mussels sautéed in white wine with butter roasted garlic, lobster paella or char-grilled sirloin tips.”
