Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney has angered some conservatives by repeating his belief that humans contribute to global climate change, but he and his aides believe a broader strategy of standing firm will counter the perception that he is a flip-flopper.

It helps explain why Romney defended the universal health care law he signed while governor of Massachusetts, despite similar complaints from the right about the insurance mandate it includes.
