EMD Serono has a permanent president

EMD Serono Inc., a biopharmaceutical company with operations in Rockland, said that interim president James Hoyes has been permanently appointed to that post.

EMD Serono, which has a focus on developing treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, is an affiliate of Merck KGaA, a German company focused on pharmaceuticals and chemicals.

In May, EMD Serono announced that Fereydoun Firouz had resigned from his position as president and chief executive after he had “independently decided to pursue other professional opportunities.’’ Hoyes, who was then the company’s chief commercial officer, was tapped as the acting head of the organization.

As president, Hoyes is responsible for driving the strategic direction of the US commercial organization as well as managing the day-to-day business of the US affiliate of Merck KGaA, EMD Serono said in its press release.
