Pursued by police, man dies in 47-foot leap from bridge

A 64-year-old Princeton man was killed early this morning when he jumped 47 feet from a highway bridge in Central Massachusetts after being chased by police, State Police said.

State Police joined Princeton police as they pursued the man, who was wanted for an alleged assault with a dangerous weapon, on Route 140 and then on Route 190 southbound, State Police said in a a statement.

The man, whose name was not released, drove his 2005 Jeep Liberty onto the Quinapoxet Bridge on Route 190, which spans the West Boylston-Holden line, State Police said.

The man got out of his car at about 12:38 a.m. on the bridge. A State Police trooper ran after him, ordering him to stop and not to jump. The man jumped, landing headfirst on a rocky embankment, State Police said.


The death is being investigated by Troop C of the State Police and State Police detectives, the statement said.
