Track fire snarls service on Red Line

A small track fire was extinguished by Red Line workers in the tunnel between South Station and Broadway MBTA stops this afternoon, T and fire officials said.

Power was shut off after 3 p.m. while Boston firefighters investigated the smoky conditions. Power was restored shortly before 4 p.m. The cause is under investigation.

No injuries were reported.

The fire department had asked that power be shut off to the third rail while firefighters checked the tunnel to make sure the fire hadn’t spread.
