Covidien signs on as Deutsche Bank Championship sponsor

The Deutsche Bank Championship, a local golf tournament, announced a new partnership with Covidien, a global health care products company with US headquarters in Mansfield.

The partnership will focus on health and wellness and will support local children’s programs, Deutsche Bank Championship said in a press release.

The golf tournament, whose major sponsors include Deutsche Bank and EMC Corp., the data storage giant headquartered in Hopkinton, bills itself as “New England’s premier PGA Tour event.’’ It is held annually over Labor Day weekend at the TPC Boston golf club in Norton.

As part of the partnership, Covidien helped launch “The First Tee of Massachusetts’s Nine Core Values and Nine Healthy Habits’’ children’s program at the Hockomock Area YMCA’s Invesys Foxboro Branch, the Deutsche Bank release said.

“The Covidien Partnership for Neighborhood Wellness supports a variety of projects that increase access to health care,’’ Teresa Hacunda, Covidien’s director of civic affairs, said in a statement. “We have a particular focus on the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity. The Company applauds the innovative initiatives in place at the Hockomock Area YMCA and other programs that help promote wellness in our communities.’’

Other Deutsche Bank Championship sponsors include Golf Town, BMW, Delta, and Gulf.
