Hingham reservoir shut down over tampering concerns

A reservoir in Hingham was shut down today after a man was seen throwing something into the water, police said.

At 8:09 a.m., Hingham police received a report from a resident who saw the unidentified man throw something into Accord Pond on Accord Lane, a Hingham police statement said.

Police who responded to the scene found papers near the water that were not written in English. After investigating, staff from the Aquarian Water Co. elected to shut down the reservoir as a precaution, the statement said.

Police contacted the FBI, and the State Police dive team checked the water but did not find anything. The matter remains under investigation by Hingham police.

Accord Pond serves the towns of Hingham, Hull, and a portion of Cohasset. The company has other water sources, so water service was not affected by the shutdown of the pond.
