Tests continue on Hingham reservoir

A reservoir in Hingham is being tested and remains closed after reports of a man dropping an unidentified object into the water on Wednesday, officials said.

“We acted immediately upon receiving the alert,’’ said Harry Hibbard, Aquarion’s vice president of operations in Massachusetts, which shut down the water source Wednesday. “We shut down the water supply and we began taking samples for analysis. We will notify the public as soon as we have results from those samples.’’

Police were informed Wednesday morning of a man dropping something into the reservoir on Accord Lane, and police responding to the scene found papers not written in English near the water.

The reservoir serves the towns of Hingham, Hull, and a portion of Cohasset. Aquarion has multiple water sources, and its water service has not been affected by the shutdown.

“The safety and purity of the Aquarion water is not an issue,’’ Hibbard said. “It continues to meet all federal and state guidelines. The water is safe to drink.’’

Hibbard informed all state and local authorities of the incident and is working closely with emergency agencies, a statement from the company said.
