Boston PBS affiliate WGBH has a new general manager for its World Channel.
Elizabeth Cheng, the longtime vice president and director of programming and communications for WCVB-TV (Channel 5), will take over as general manager at World Channel, the digital multicast service that features documentaries and TV news from around the globe.
The channel, which is funded by grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, was launched in 2004 and is carried on 60 public television stations nationally.
In her new role, Cheng will manage the creative, technical, and financial issues at the channel as well as develop programs.
“Liz is an award-winning producer who has a deep understanding of the changing media environment and the need to reach viewers and listeners with compelling content, expressed in meaningful ways, and through a variety of platforms,’’ said Marita Rivera, vice president and general manager of WGBH Radio and Television, in a release.
Said Cheng, “I’m thrilled to be part of a team delivering unique news and informational content to a national audience.’’
At WCVB, Cheng was the creative executive producer for several series and specials and she was the executive in charge of the station’s regional weekday news magazine show, “Chronicle.’’ She was also the director of programming for New Hampshire’s ABC affiliate, WMUR-TV (Channel 9) in Manchester. WCVB and WMUR are both owned by Hearst Television Inc.
