Was that racquet man Jim Courier hitting tennis balls in the parking lot at the Staples in Brighton today? Why, yes, it was. The four-time Grand Slam champ was here to hype this weekend’s Champions Cup – with Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl, and Michael Chang – at the TD Garden (and to promote the Tenacity tennis program.) Because we know he’s buddies with the guys in REM – he had dinner with Michael Stipe and Mike Mills in New York on Sunday – we asked Courier about the band’s sudden break-up. “It’s bittersweet for me,’’ he said. “I’ve spent a lot of time at REM shows over the years, and their music means a lot to me. But it’s kind of like graduating from college. You’re like, ‘Oh, (expletive), I have to grow up now.’’’
