Paul Simon receives Academy award

Singer Paul Simon was among 178 artists, scientists, scholars, authors, and assorted others inducted into the Cambridge-based American Academy of Arts and Sciences over the weekend. Art Garfunkel’s singing partner was joined by novelist Oscar Hijuelos, Shakespeare scholar James Shapiro, short-story writer Luisa Valenzuela, chemist and Nobel laureate and chemist Ei-Ichi Negishi, Pats owner Robert Kraft, MFA director Malcolm Rogers, Hollywood movie film producer Kathleen Kennedy, and Annette Gordon-Reed, Harvard historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family.’’ Simon surprised the audience by playing “American Tune’’ from his 1973 LP “There Goes Rhymin’ Simon.’’
