Two men charged with operating illegal slot parlor in Chicopee

Two men and their company were indicted today for operating an illegal slot parlor in Chicopee, officials said.

Steven Sheldon, 48, of Westfield, owner of Cafeno’s, an Internet café, and his business partner, Steven Megliola, 52, of Longmeadow, were indicted by a special statewide grand jury on charges of organizing or promoting gambling services, and operating an illegal lottery, the attorney general’s office said in a statement.

Cafeno’s Inc., the two men’s company, faces the same charges.

“The cyber café was nothing more than an illegal, unregulated slot parlor with no protections for consumers,’’ said Attorney General Martha Coakley. “We allege that these defendants operated a gambling facility in direct violation of existing Massachusetts law.’’

Coakley’s office began an investigation into the café in September 2010 that found patrons of the venue were paying nearly exclusively for the right to gamble, officials said. Cafeno’s ceased operation in March 2011, the statement said.

The defendants are expected to be arraigned in Hampden Superior Court at a future date.
