Local Kohl’s stores will open at 1 a.m. on Black Friday

The Kohl’s department store chain said that its stores in the Boston area will now open at 1 a.m. on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Retailers have been been scrambling to adjust their plans because of the Massachusetts blue laws, which prohibit employees from working before midnight on Thanksgiving Day. Some national chains had originally planned to open at midnight but have opted to change their plans.

Yesterday Best Buy became the latest national retailer to change its mind about 12 a.m. Black Friday openings in Massachusetts.

In recent days, Macy’s, Target, and Walmart have all backed off from previously announced midnight promotions at their locations here. Macy’s now has scheduled a 12:30 a.m. opening on Black Friday.

Target is planning a 1 a.m. start, and Walmart will keeps its doors shut until 4 a.m.
