Stop & Shop celebrates grand opening in Chelmsford

The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. is ginning up much hoopla and planned hilarity for the grand opening of its state-of-the-art store in Chelmsford.

Wally the Green Monster, the official Red Sox, is set to put in cameo appearances at the new store today, tomorrow, and Sunday, the chain said in a press release.

And there’s also a Fiat Sweepstakes that gives customers a chance to win a 2012 Fiat 500.

The 72,000-square-foot Chelmsford store includes such firsts for the chain as an in-store nutritionist and a Tree House, an area where Stop & Shop minds the children so their parents can go grocery shopping. Also new: Curbside pick-up. Customers can order online, then pick up what they ordered without leaving their car.

The new store is replacing a smaller Stop & Shop at another Chelmsford location. The new store will be staffed by more than 230 full- and part-time associates.

The new Chelmsford store will also boast of many of the latest features that Stop & Shop is rolling out to some of the nearly 400 stores in the Quincy-based chain.

For example, the Chelmsford store will feature free Wi-Fi. And customers can opt to use Scan It!, a hand-held scanning device available in the store. Another option: Scan It! Mobile, a mobile app that allows customers to shop, scan, and tally their order with their personal iPhone or Android device.

The Stop & Shop in Chelmsford is debuting only a few weeks after Wegmans opened its first Massachusetts store in Northborough. Covering two football fields of square footage, Wegmans offers up such delicacies as coconut cream kale and shaved brussels sprouts.
