WCVB’s Vrees named news director of the year

Broadcast & Cable magazine has named WCVB-TV (Channel 5)’s Andrew Vrees as news director of the year.

Vrees is featured on the cover of the trade publication’s current issue.

The national industry magazine recognized Vrees for his “commitment to content,’’ including a decision to dispatch WCVB reporter Sean Kelly to Afghanistan for a series of stories that focused on Massachusetts National Guard 1st Battalion 181st Infantry Regiment.

Vrees also added a 4:30 a.m. newscast at WCVB last September.

In the most recent November ratings period, WCVB won all the newscasts it competed in among total viewers and the key 25-54 demographic.

Before Vrees joined WCVB in 2009, he had been news director at sister station WMUR-TV in Manchester, N.H., since 2004. Both stations are owned by Hearst Television Inc.

“Andrew deserves this recognition,’’ said Bill Fine, WCVB president and general manager, in a statement. “His leadership of NewsCenter 5, in one of the most competitive markets imaginable, has been extraordinary.’’
