Authorities are conducting a homicide investigation on Bates Street in New Bedford, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
Police and paramedics found the body of Melvin Pina, 33, of New Bedford, in the backyard of 73 Bates St. shortly after being called to the scene at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a statement released by the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
New Bedford police, State Police, and the district attorney’s office are investigating, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy, according to the statement.
The address is the site of a two-family home, according to the New Bedford Assessors Office’s website.
Josh Mello, who lives next door, said he could see authorities examining the body from his window.
“I couldn’t believe it,’’ he said. “I moved here because this was supposed to be a safer neighborhood.’’
