Woman, 47, apparently falls out of pickup and is killed in Orleans; driver is charged

A 47-year-old Orleans woman died Friday night after witnesses told police she fell from the passenger side of a slow-moving pickup truck and was struck by the vehicle’s rear wheel, Orleans police said.

According to a police statement, Diane Cole was traveling on Finlay Road in Orleans in a white GMC truck driven by Dennis Maskell, 69, also of Orleans, before she was struck. Police said officers responded to the scene at 5 p.m. and found Cole lying “in the roadway with extensive bodily injuries.’’ Maskell had parked the pickup on the side of the road, with the passenger-side door still open, according to the Police Department’s statement.

Cole was transported to Cape Cod Hospital, where she later died from her injuries, police said. Orleans police said officers believe Maskell and Cole knew each other.

Maskell was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation, and motor vehicle homicide, police said. He was released on bail and will appear in Orleans District Court on Monday.

No further information was available Friday night and police said the incident is under investigation.
