DEDHAM — US Senator Scott Brown and his wife, former WCVB-TV reporter Gail Huff, were unhurt Friday night after the SUV in which they were passengers veered off the road to avoid a collision with a pizza delivery vehicle and struck a telephone pole here, police and neighbors said.
Brown and Huff were en route to a charity event and traveling on Sprague Street when a driver from Dedham House of Pizza pulled out from a side street, Sergeant Mike Feeley of the Dedham police said.
Authorities said the two vehicles collided but could not say who hit whom in the 8:28 p.m. accident, according to Dennis Sulinski, a police dispatcher. Neighbors said the Jeep struck a telephone pole. The driver of the other vehicle was also not injured, police said.
The 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee was driven by Chris Burgoyne, an aide in Brown’s Senate office, according to Brown spokeswoman Marcie Kinzel. Brown and Huff were heading to a Dedham fund-raiser for Best Buddies, an organization that supports people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Burgoyne was not injured.
Feeley said police did not consider alcohol a factor. No one was cited in the accident and the air bags on the Jeep deployed, Feeley said.
Brown reiterated to a Globe reporter outside his Wrentham home late Friday night that he and his wife were passengers in the Jeep when a car came out of a side street. He, too, indicated that alcohol was not a factor.
“I was going to a Best Buddies event; Gail and I were passengers,’’ Brown said, at the same time his office in Washington was releasing a media statement about the two-car accident.
Brown and Huff, who earlier in the day had attended the Red Sox home opener, made it to the Best Buddies event after the collision, his office said.
At the corner of Sprague and Azalea Circle Friday night, tread marks, scattered debris, and puddles of oil were visible on the ground near a slightly dented telephone pole.
Neighbor Ines Petruzziello said she heard the crash and emerged from her home to see the aftermath. “I went down the end of my driveway and saw an SUV into the pole,’’ she said.
Marcus Cherry, another neighbor, said he heard the crash, too. “I just heard a big bang. It shook the house,’’ he said. “I called the police.’’
