Chiofaro to draw new plan for Harbor Garage on waterfront

Boston Developer Donald Chiofaro says he will submit a new plan to redevelop the Harbor Parking Garage along the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway after a prior plan failed to gain traction in City Hall.

Instead of pursuing a towering residential and office complex, Chiofaro told city regulators he will submit a new proposal when Boston revises its building properties near the harbor, between downtown and Dorchester. The timing of that submission is unclear.

In a letter to regulators, Chiofaro indicated he is again meeting with residents and environmental advocates, some of whom strongly opposed the now-scrapped plan for a pair of skyscrapers that would have been among the tallest buildings in the city.

Chiofaro is part of partnership that bought the garage along Atlantic Avenue near the New England Aquarium in 2007 for about $155 million. In 2009, he filed plans fora 40-story-office building and a 59-story hotel and condominium tower on the property. His letter yesterday formally withdrew that proposal.
