First Wind project in Hawaii begins commercial operations

First Wind, a Boston-based wind energy company, announced that construction of its 21-megawatt Kaheawa Wind II project in Hawaii has been completed and commercial operations have begun.

Along with Kaheawa Wind I project, which went online about several years ago, the new Kaheawa Wind II project will have the combined output to generate enough energy to power up to 18,700 Maui homes annually. The new project advances the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative, which aims to have 70 percent of Hawaii’s energy come from clean, renewable sources by 2030, First Wind said in a press release.

“The first phase of Kaheawa Wind was our first project to achieve commercial operations in 2006, so it is very gratifying to complete the second phase of this project, which has the distinction of being our 13th wind facility to go online in six years,’’ First Wind chief executive Paul Gaynor said in a statement. “We now have projects in operation in five different states.’’
