PerkinElmer looks to raise awareness for pre-eclampsia screening for pregnant women

PerkinElmer Inc., a Waltham life sciences company that makes lab instruments and genetic screening products, said it has entered into a collaboration with the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants to increase awareness of pre-eclampsia screening for pregnant women in Europe.

Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy complication that causes high blood pressure, swelling, and increased protein levels in expectant mothers, with potential adverse effects to the mother and to unborn and newborn babies, the company noted in a press release. It is estimated to affect nearly 8.4 million women worldwide a year, or about one in every 200 pregnancies. Pre-eclampsia is considered a major cause of premature birth.

Among PerkinElmer’s products are an assay kit and risk-calculation software that are designed for pre-eclampsia screening. The assay enables the detection of PlGF – a protein produced by the placenta during pregnancy. An analysis of PlGF can help determine which women are likely to develop pre-eclampsia, PerkinElmer said.
