A YoFresh Yogurt Café franchisee has leased about 950 square feet of retail space in Newton and plans to open a shop in either late summer or early fall, said a broker involved in the transaction.
The broker is the Grossman Cos. Inc., a Quincy firm that provides landlord and tenant services. In the transaction for space at 14 Austin St., the Grossman Cos. represented the landlord, Austin Street Realty Trust.
YoFresh Yogurt Cafe is a chain that offers a large assortment of all natural yogurts through franchised shops and kiosks. Newton will be company’s first store location in Massachusetts, though there is a seasonal cart at Faneuil Hall Marketplace.
Co-tenants at the Austin Street shopping complex include a Starbucks and the Lobster Wok restaurant, the Grossman Cos. said.

The overall frozen yogurt market has been is growing in the United States as ice cream sales soften.
According to the Department of Agriculture’s 2010 summary of dairy production, frozen yogurt production has increased 8.1 percent since 2009 to 49.7 million gallons. Regular ice cream production has gone down 0.6 percent, and low-fat ice cream production has decreased 4.9 percent during the same time period.
