Nantucket beaches cleared for two hours after shark sighting

A beachgoer called police after seeing a shark in the waters off of Fisherman’s Beach on the posh resort island of Nantucket today.

Harbormaster Sheila Lucey said her office received a call from police dispatch around 1 p.m. about a shark sighting.

Fisherman’s Beach is not a guarded beach, but a lifeguard from neighboring Surfside Beach cleared the water. Guards also cleared the waters of Surfside and Nobadeer beaches.

Lucey said she contacted Chatham to see if a marine survey company could do an overflight. She said officials flew over the south shore and east shore of Nantucket up to Great Point, but did not see any sharks.

The beaches were reopened at 3 p.m., two hours since the shark sighting, Lucey said.
