Labor Day convergence of movers and tourists predicted for Hub

Boston residents may want to seriously consider fleeing the city this Labor Day weekend.

Not only will the streets be clogged with moving trucks and broken futon frames on Sept. 1, the biggest moving day of the year, but tourists will also be descending on the city at the same time.

Boston is the fourth most popular destination in North America this Labor Day weekend (behind New York, Chicago, and Las Vegas), according to the discount travel site Hotwire.com, with hotel room rates averaging $127 a night. (Hotwire must have some pretty great deals, considering last September average room rates in Boston and Cambridge were $226 a night, and prices are on the rise).

Just be glad that Move-In Day didn’t coincide with Labor Day last year, when Boston was the second most popular Labor Day destination.
