Paul Bessire to leave post as ICA deputy director

Institute of Contemporary Art deputy director Paul Bessire will leave the museum next month after 12 years to take a similar post at the Brooklyn Museum in New York. Bessire, who helped the ICA complete its $75 million campaign for the waterfront home that opened in 2006, said he’s thrilled to be heading to Brooklyn, where he was born and grew up.

In addition, his wife, Anne Kaplan, an education video producer, has scored a major project with the New York State Board of Education. “So it seemed the moment was right,’’ said Bessire, who leaves the ICA Sept. 7 and starts in Brooklyn Sept. 10. “I’m going from working contemporary, which I love, to working at a much larger scale.’’ At about $30 million, the Brooklyn Museum’s budget is three times the size of the ICA’s.
