More dolphins found stranded; two dead

Six dolphins were stranded at the Wellfleet gut on Sunday morning, marine mammal specialists said. Two of the animals were dead when found at the site, which is a part of the Herring River.

The four surviving dolphins were transported to Herring Cove in Provincetown for release, said Brian Sharp, stranding coordinator for the Yarmouth Port-based International Fund for Animal Welfare.

Rescuers selected Herring Cove for the release because it has “good access to deep water,’’ he said, and the animals were released there at 2:15 p.m.

Dolphin rescues are less common in the summer, but recently there have been several cases of these mammals being stranded, he said. Several dolphins were stranded onshore Friday at Eastham, where one died.
