A thief wielding what appeared to be a hand grenade robbed a Rockland convenience store Friday night, local police said.
A man who swathed his face in bandanas entered the Tedeschi’s Food Shop at 268 Union St. in Rockland early Friday evening and demanded money and a pack of Camel non-filtered cigarettes from the store clerks, Rockland police said in a statement.
The clerks gave the man an undetermined amount of money, and he fled on foot. No injuries were reported.
Police described the thief as a white man around 6 feet tall with a medium build and said he was wearing tan cargo pants and a baggy, brownish, long-sleeved shirt.
Over the top of his head he wore a green camouflage bandana under a white baseball cap with a turquoise brim bearing a logo for the “Brickyard 400 — Indianapolis Motor Speedway — August 5, 1995.’’ The cap had spots of light blue paint on the left side. A second, lime green bandana covered the man’s features, police said.
A man who answered the phone at the Union Street Tedeschi’s on Saturday referred calls to the corporate office, also in Rockland, where there was no answer.
