North Shore native shines on American Idol

Last week, Angie Miller made it into the Top 4 on American Idol’s Season 12. The Beverly, Mass. native, 19, has distinguished herself from her competition with her belty pop vocals inspired by Beyonce and UK pop singer, Jessie J. Last night’s performance [below] of “Who You Are,” by Jessie J got a mention from the pop star on Twitter: “Just watched this. AMAZING! I am so proud.”

This season’s Top 4 is an all-female competition. This hasn’t happened since Season 3 with Fantasia Barrino, Diana DeGarmo, Jasmine Trias, and La Toya London.

Miller auditioned in New York City with Jessie J’s “Momma Knows Best.” Before she sang, she admitted that she has 40 percent hearing loss in her right ear and 20 percent loss in her right ear, adding a challenge for her when she performs. Judge Randy Jackson said she was one of the best auditions of the day.

Miller has received singing guidance from her mother, Tana Miller, who is also a singer. Angie and Tana have both competed in Massachusetts’ singing competition, North Shore Star, though neither won.

Miller is also a songwriter, which she demonstarted in the solo round of Hollywood Week. Her performance of her original song, “You Set Me Free,’’ which impressed the judges.

As a Top 4 finalist, Miller will tour on the American Idol tour this summer. If she becomes a Top 3 finalist, she will make a hometown visit to Beverly, Mass.
