Groups join to raise funds in support of gay community

Nine Boston charities have organized today to take part in a social media-fueled charity challenge in support of the LGBTQ community.

More than 400 charities across the country and in Puerto Rico are participating in the 24-hour Giving OUT Day.

“This is a year of great momentum for the LGBT community and each one of us has the power to make it even greater,’’ said Lee Swislow, executive director of Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), one of the organizations taking part. “But we can’t be satisfied until every member of our community can live freely and equally. If you support the LGBT organizations that matter most to you on Give OUT day, we’ll move ever closer to making that dream a reality.’’

MassEquality, Fenway Health, The Theater Offensive, Family Equality Council, the Bisexual Resource Center, the Network/La Red, the Hispanic Black Gay Coalition, and the North East Transwomen’s Alliance are also participating.

Anyone wishing to donate can visit or visit the websites of the individual non-profit organizations participating.
