Tanglewood
Although Tanglewood is a keenly awaited musical event every year, this summer’s musical extravaganza will be extra special: New Boston Symphony Orchestra conductor Andris Nelsons will give his first performance with the orchestra on July 27.

Outside the Box festival
The Boston Arts Summer Institute is organizing “Outside the Box’’ — a free eight-day festival in July that will bring outdoor performances, live music, comedy, and more.
The outdoor festival will be spread throughout the city and will take advantage of Boston’s most popular destinations, including the Hatch Shell, Boston Common, City Hall Plaza, and Copley Square.

Newport Jazz Festival
The very popular Newport Jazz Festival returns this summer, and will include big names like Herbie Hancock, Natalie Cole, and more. A week earlier, catch the jazz festival’s sister event, the Newport Folk Festival.

Shakespeare on the Common

Boston Landmarks Orchestra
There is something great about listening to classical music in the warm summer weather. And for free? Even better. The Boston Landmarks Orchestra, led by music director Christopher Wilkins, will start its free concerts on Wednesday nights at the Hatch Shell.

Hippie Chic at the MFA
Feeling nostalgic for the 1970s? Check out the fashion of counterculture at the MFA’s summer exhibtion, Hippie Chic. The exhibition will feature about 50 ensembles made of materials reminiscent of that time period (tie-dye and fringe, of course).
