Tewksbury man identified in fatal Billerica crash

A man who was killed in a multi-car accident on Route 3 in Billerica Saturday night has been identified as 27-year-old Steven Khabbaz of Tewksbury, according to State Police. Troopers responded to the scene, north of Exit 26 in Billerica, at 10:05 p.m. after receiving reports of a body in the roadway, State Police said in a statement. Witnesses told police that Khabbaz had been in a single-car crash on Route 3 North, then got out of his car, walked down a travel lane, and was struck by a passing driver. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Traffic in the area was limited for about two hours during the investigation and three minor crashes occurred because of the body in the road, prompting officials to re-route traffic around the crash scene, said the statement.

Captain Joseph Bradley of the Billerica Fire Department told the Globe Saturday night that about 10 to 12 drivers and passengers suffered only minor scratches.

No charges have been filed. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
