787 returns to Boston due to fuel pump issue

A possible fuel pump problem force a Tokyo-bound Japan Airlines 787 flying out of Logan International Airport to turn around over Canada Thursday afternoon and return to Boston.

The pilot did not declare an emergency, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Massachusetts Port Authority is not planning to send fire equipment to greet the aircraft at Logan when it makes its expected landing shortly after 6 p.m.

“As a standard precautionary measure due to a maintenance message indicator, JL007 is returning to Boston for check,’’ said airline spokeswoman Carol Anderson.
