Unions try to put charge into presidential Vineyard vacation

The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 103 plans to send a dozen members to stand by the docks at Vineyard Haven on Wednesday, hoping to catch the vacationing President Obama’s attention about a local labor issue.

Workers from the Dorchester-based local will hand leaflets to ferry-goers, urging Obama to enter into an agreement guaranteeing that a planned FBI facility in Chelsea will be built entirely by unions in exchange for organized labor agreeing not to disrupt construction.

“We’re not going to be ruining people’s vacations,’’ said Michael P. Monahan, the union’s business manager. “We’re going to be handing these out as people arrive and as people depart … We want to put this on people’s radar screens.’’

The flier describes the unions as “confused and a little dismayed’’ that the FBI would not pursue a project labor agreement for the Chelsea building, and points out that Obama signed an executive order encouraging the use of such pacts.

“We just can’t seem to get anybody’s attention over this massive FBI building that’s being proposed in Chelsea,’’ Monahan said. “[Obama] has people who can deal with this.’’

“We’re not going to ruin his vacation but I think the president will know about it,’’ Monahan said.
