The Second Annual Boston Ice Cream Takedown took place on Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Arts at the Armory in Somerville. Local gourmands submitted 2 gallons of their tastiest creations for the chance to win prizes like a new Kitchenaid ice cream maker. Entrants included all kinds of sweet and savory concoctions with ingredients as far-ranging as fresh fruit to smoked meats.
Photographed: Paula Waxman showed off her liquid nitrogen tank which she uses to make her handmade ice cream at ‘Wiches of Boston. Her vegan chocolate hazelnut ice cream, made with almond milk, sold out within in an hour.

Lauren Alford of West Newton is a local food blogger who submitted a key lime pie ice cream.

Ivy Depner of San Jose, Calif., and Ann Assarsson-Krentz of Burlington. Their frozen custard, Tipsy Peach, was made with bourbon and fresh peaches.

Don Hernstrom, Head Ice Cream Maker for JP Licks, was a judge at the Boston Ice Cream Takedown.

Ben Peskin of Somerville, Steve Donovan of Somerville, and Carrie Tate of East Cambridge. “I love ice cream, except when it has beef short rib in it,’’ said Peskin, referring to one of the submissions.
