Aaron Hernandez cousin arraigned on contempt of court charge

FALL RIVER — Tanya Singleton, a cousin of football player and alleged murderer Aaron Hernandez, was arraigned today in Bristol Superior Court on a criminal contempt charge for refusing to testify before a grand jury investigating the slaying of Odin Lloyd in June.

Hernandez, a former star tight end with the New England Patriots, faces a first-degree murder charge in Lloyd’s death. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is currently being held without bail at the Bristol County Jail.

Singleton was offered immunity but refused to testify. The judge today ordered her to continue to be held without bail, setting an Oct. 3 pretrial and bail hearing. She has been held since Aug 1 at the South Bay Correctional Center in Boston.

After the hearing, E. Peter Parker, Singleton’s attorney, declined to comment, saying only, “She’s doing good.’’

Singleton allegedly bought a bus ticket for Hernandez’s friend Ernest Wallace so he could flee to Florida days after the murder.

The Bristol County grand jury handed up indictments Thursday against Hernandez, Wallace, and Singleton.

Hernandez also faces a number of firearms charges; Wallace faces a charge of being an accessory after the fact to murder.

Hernandez allegedly killed Lloyd, 27, an amateur football player from Dorchester, in the early morning of June 17 in a North Attleborough industrial park not far from Hernandez’s home in that same town.

Authorities say Wallace and another man, Carlos Ortiz, were in the vehicle with Hernandez when he picked up Lloyd the night of the slaying and drove him to the industrial park where he was fatally shot. Ortiz, charged with gun possession, has not been indicted. Part of the prosecution’s case is built on his testimony.

Wallace and Ortiz both have pleaded not guilty to all charges.
