Smoldering cable results in suspension of Orange Line service

Orange Line service between North Station and Back Bay was temporarily suspended late this morning after an MBTA worker discovered a smoldering cable near Haymarket Station, MBTA officials said.

The MBTA shut down power to the third rail and closed the line at about 10:45 a.m. The public transit agency’s power department responded shortly afterwards and repaired the cable, Joe Pesaturo, MBTA spokesman, said in an e-mail.

During the repairs, Orange Line passengers were asked to transfer to the Green Line for service downtown. Service resumed at about 12:10 p.m., Pesaturo said.

The cause of the smoldering cable is under investigation.

The shutdown comes after Red Line service between Park Street and JFK/UMass Station was suspended late Saturday for several days after a fire damaged wires.
