First look at ‘Captain Phillips’ at New York Film Festival

Captain Phillips,’’ the saga of Richard Phillips, the ship captain from Vermont who survived being taken hostage by Somali pirates in 2009, won’t be in theaters for a while, but it screened at the New York Film Festival the other night, and the reviews are generally favorable. Even though we all know how the story ends — Phillips survives — director Paul Greengrass apparently manages to make the high-seas adventure compelling. Tom Hanks stars as Phillips, who hails from tiny Underhill, Vt., and Catherine Keener plays his wife. Says Variety: “Hanks is predictably sturdy as the embattled captain (save for a come-and-go Boston accent), playing the kind of Everyman facing extraordinary circumstances he’s played many times.’’
