Patrick signs ‘tech tax’ repeal

As expected, Governor Deval Patrick Friday signed the repeal of the new tax on software services, ending a two-month-long controversy that had inflamed the state’s business and technology sectors.

The governor’s office announced the signing of the bill on Twitter , which had been a key platform for members of the state’s tech community to protest the tax.

Earlier this week the Massachusetts Senate and House each voted overwhelmingly to abolish the levy, which imposed the state’s 6.25 percent sales tax on a range of computer and software services. Tech executives complained the tax was so poorly written that it was confusing to interpret and could add significant new costs on purchasing software and related products.
