Vice President Biden to attend Boston Marathon bombing commemoration

Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden will attend a tribute ceremony in Boston on the one-year anniversary of the Marathon bombings, the White House and Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s office said Tuesday.

The noontime ceremony next Tuesday at the Hynes Convention Center, near the finish line where the attacks took place, is expected to draw 3,000 people, Walsh told Biden in an April 2 letter inviting him. Family members of those killed in the attacks and their aftermath are expected to attend.

The commemoration is hosted jointly by the city, state and Boston Athletic Association, which stages the Marathon each year. According to Walsh’s letter, “The program will include speakers, music and images coordinated to honor our heroes and remember the victims.’’

Quoting from remarks President Obama delivered during a visit to Boston three days after the attack, Walsh wrote, “As the President noted in his visit last year, we are to ‘run with endurance the race that is set before us.’ It’s with this Administration’s support that we have done that.’’
