In 2007, Damon Bishop and Cara Kuball had a sweet idea — a film festival based on the theme of pancakes. “They are one of the funniest food items,’’ said Bishop. “They are also a great blank slate onto which you can throw any type of film you want.’’
According to Bishop, the pancake idea yields surprisingly original submissions. “It’s sort of like a film based Rorschach test — what do you find in this pancake?’’ he said. “One of our favorite parts of putting on the fest is when the submissions start rolling into IPFF Head Quarters and we get to see the weird and wacky places people go with a simple prompt.’’
The International Pancake Film Festival has toured nationally in galleries and movie theaters. “Look Back in Batter,’’ a five-year retrospective of 19 pancake-themed short flicks from 2007 through 2012, is planned for May 1. If you get hungry watching, no worries. Freshly made pancakes will be served during the screenings.
