Much needed rain is falling across the area this morning and will continue into the early afternoon and evening before tapering off overnight. A second area of rain will move along the coastline late tonight and clip eastern areas with another round of showers. Saturday will not be a washout although there will be some showers early in the day. Thereafter the trend will be for cloudy but dry weather in the afternoon. A new area of rain will move through late Sunday evening and into Monday before some sunshine returns for the rest of next week. Temperatures will be coolest today as they remain in the 50s and lower 60s. A return to 70F degree afternoons is likely for much of next week. A storm moving to our south today will keep much of New England in a cool wet flow of air. You can see on the map below the position of the storm later this evening. I am expecting half to one inch of rain to fall during the day and this will help moisten a very dry ground. We tend not to think of rain needs fall but this is an important time of year to have water in the ground. Trees, shrubs and perennials are all getting ready for the winter ahead and need water to set new roots and get through the cold season. The rain is moving west to east today and you can see on the loop above that the area goes back to the west quite far. Areas to the south of the Massachusetts turnpike will see a bit less rain especially as you approach Cape Cape and the Islands. A cool east wind will not allow temperatures to move very far today so expect a very chilly afternoon.
Saturday and Sunday
Rainfall, if it occurs this weekend, will be most likely early Saturday and late Sunday. Between that time clouds will be the rule and temperatures will range from the lower 60s Saturday afternoon to upper 60s Sunday. There could be some breaks of sunshine later Saturday and Sunday morning but don’t look for bright blue skies this weekend. Remember apple season is in full swing. Don’t let the weather stop you from picking. Local agriculture relies on our support during these critical fall weekends.
Gardening this week
This time of the year many weeds are creating seeds to produce new weeds for next spring. There are several things you can do right now, to make your garden closer to weed free for 2013. In this video I show you how I help control weeds in my own garden without using chemicals.
