A return to summer heat and humidity on the way

My fellow meteorologist over at WBZ, Barry Burbank, used the phrase “massive moves” to describe the trend in temperature the next several days. This is quite accurate and will wreak havoc with your wardrobe the rest of the week.

This morning, temperatures were in the upper 30s in a few isolated spots with lower 40s quite common across much of New England. The air was dry, but it cooled enough last night to create a lot of dew on the ground.
Temperatures rose quite nicely this afternoon and rebounded into the 60s for most spots. You probably noticed a marked increase in cloudiness throughout the day as warmer air streamed north and east over the cool air at the ground. These clouds will thicken overnight and there could be a few showers towards morning.
Temperatures tonight will fall into the 50s for one more comfortable night of sleeping before the humidity makes a run at us tomorrow.
Although there will be a lot of cloudiness on Tuesday temperatures will be about 10 degrees warmer than today and by this time tomorrow you will certainly begin to feel the increase in moisture in the air. If we get some sunshine later in the afternoon, the temperature could hit 80F in a few towns, especially southwest of Boston.
Tomorrow night will be a summer-like night with readings hovering around 70F for much of the evening and a tropical feeling to the air. This will set up a very warm to hot day Wednesday. Although the record for Wednesday isn’t in jeopardy, (99F set in 1983) it’s still going to be one of the warmest days we have had since mid-July. We made it through August without a single 90 degree day. That was the first time in 5 years that has happened. There is often at least one day in September that hits 90F and my feeling is, if it’s going to happen this month, it’s going to be Wednesday.
The tropical air remains in place Wednesday night and Thursday. Boston could stay in the lower 70s all night Wednesday and will get back into the 80s Thursday. There will be more clouds Thursday and a good shot at showers and storms later in the day.
Friday will clear as drier air pushes the humidity and heat out to sea. This will set up a nice fall-like weekend with cooler conditions similar to Sunday.

The tropics, as expected, has become a bit more active. There is still plenty of time to see a very active season and we shouldn’t be lulled into a false sense of complacency just because this has been a quiet season thus far. Humberto is a now a tropical storm and is forecast to become a hurricane early Wednesday. Right now it appears there is no threat to land from this storm, but I will be watching the tropics closely for any changes.
Gardening this week
Not that long ago I was fortunate to take a trip to Ecuador. The country is very beautiful and known for a wonderful growing climate. In this video I show you some of my visit to a farm that grows roses for markets all over the world.
