Expect sunshine Saturday and Sunday with highs in the mid-70s over Cape Cod and the islands.

It’s Father’s Day weekend, and it’s also the final weekend of astronomical spring. Meteorological summer began June 1, and it’s certainly going to feel like it. I expect this weekend will be the first one where both days will be beach days. Saturday and Sunday will bring only slight variations in temperature.

A weak weather system moves through the area early Friday morning and ushers in a cooler air mass for the day. Temperatures Friday afternoon will remain in the upper 60s and lower 70s. Any showers and clouds in the morning will give way to clearing in the afternoon, and I expect a lot of sunshine by the end of the day.

On Saturday, the heat begins to build as high pressure that crosses over the region and then pushes offshore. This allows for more of a southwesterly flow of air. This flow will bring increasing temperatures and humidity, which will peak Monday.

If you want to head to the beach this weekend, you can expect sunshine Saturday and Sunday with highs both days in the mid-70s over Cape Cod and the islands. It’ll get into the 80s elsewhere. A few spots over the Merrimack Valley will nudge 90 degrees on Sunday.

Astronomically high tides will occur in the afternoons this weekend. Water temperatures are reaching the lower 60s and will continue to rise until late August.

Looking into next week, many of us will get into the low, middle, and upper 90s on Monday. Add in the humidity, and it will feel at or over 100 degrees. As a cold front approaches, there could be a couple of showers Monday afternoon or evening before a return to warm — but less humid — air for the rest of the week.
