Massachusetts residents woke to bitterly cold temperatures on Tuesday.

Arctic air is invading the region, bringing dangerously frigid weather that prompted several school districts to close for the day.

The National Weather Service is forecasting that the day’s highs will hold in the teens and lower 20s.

“It will be COLD today, please bundle up in extra layers if you need to spend time outside,” forecasters wrote.

On top of the forecast cold, wind chills are expected to drop the felt temperature into the single digits and below zero.

“These coldest values will be found across the eastern slopes of the Berkshires, northern Worcester and northern Middlesex counties where a Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect,” the service said.

In addition to the cold, some parts of the state saw a few snow showers early in the morning that left behind a dusting.

“Ocean effect snow showers are also possible along the Outer Cape,” the service said

The biting cold is expected through Wednesday morning, when more seasonable temperatures will make their return.
